Your NDIS Guide
Everything you need to know about the National Disability Insurance Scheme — in plain language, no jargon.
What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian Government program that provides funding to people under 65 living with a permanent and significant disability. It gives participants the ability to choose and control the supports they access, rather than being assigned services by the government.
The NDIS is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for the NDIS, you must:
- Be under 65 years of age when you first apply
- Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Special Category Visa holder
- Have a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to take part in everyday activities
Some early childhood supports are available for children under 6 with developmental delay through the NDIS Early Childhood approach.
How does an NDIS plan work?
Once you're approved, you'll work with an NDIS planner to develop a personalised plan. Your plan outlines:
- Your goals and what you want to achieve
- The funded supports you can access
- How your funding is managed (self-managed, plan-managed, or NDIA-managed)
Plans are typically reviewed annually and can be adjusted as your needs change.
Registered vs unregistered providers — what's the difference?
Registered providers have been audited by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Unregistered providers haven't been through that audit process — but that doesn't mean lower quality. Many excellent providers, including Thrive in Life Care, operate as unregistered providers.
Who can use unregistered providers? If your NDIS funding is self-managed or plan-managed, you can engage any provider — registered or not. Only participants with NDIA-managed funds are restricted to registered providers.

We support participants who are self-managed or plan-managed. If you're NDIA-managed and want to work with us, speak to your planner about switching to plan-management.
What support categories can fund our services?
Thrive in Life Care services can typically be funded under:
- Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation — for community access and social participation support
- Assistance with Daily Life — for personal care and household assistance
- Support Coordination (Capacity Building) — Levels 1, 2 and 3 including Specialist Support Coordination
